What Should You Know About Flood Insurance
With the recent rains and wildfires in California, many people could experience more flooding. The chances of flooding are on the rise here in California due to the climate changes. Per FEMA, many experts believe that the actual risk may be significantly underestimated. Here are some quick facts you should know:
Does my homeowner’s insurance cover flooding?
No. This is a separate policy from a homeowners insurance policy. Flood insurance will cover your house and your belongings for flood-related damage. Due to the high risk and high cost nature of flooding, flood insurance is considered a separate risk.
What does flood insurance not cover?
Flood insurance does not cover outdoor items like pools, decks, fences, trees and wells. It does not cover stuff underground like basement personal items or furnaces. It will not cover mildew or mold you could have prevented. Flood insurance will not cover your currency, precious metals or important papers, cars/vehicles, living expenses during repairs and non-flood issues like sewer backups or earth movement. If these exclusions concern you, then we can help find you a policy to cover these missing pieces.
So what does flood insurance cover?
It covers both building property like the structure of your home including the foundation with a maximum limit of $250,000 as well as personal property including your personal belongings like furniture and electronics with a maximum limit of $100,000.
